“I want to be a part of it, New York, New York” - Frank Sinatra
That famous lyric by Ol’ Blue Eyes epitomizes the energy of the state’s bettors as legalized mobile New York sports betting celebrates its one-year anniversary on Sunday, Jan. 8 - the final full day of the NFL’s regular season.
After then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo approved online sports betting in the Empire State in April 2021, the next nine months were marked by a wait-and-see approach until the first four of nine mobile providers launched on the first day of the NFL’s wild-card weekend: NY BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook NY, DraftKings NY and FanDuel NY.
Then, in order, would come BetMGM NY, WynnBet NY, PointsBet NY, Resorts World NY and finally Bally Bet NY.
Which Sportsbooks Have Dominated?
For some perspective on how the New York sports apps market has developed, this chart shows the percentage of overall handle numbers by all nine mobile providers thru the week of Dec. 25, 50 of 52 weeks:
FanDuel, in the first few weeks, has established dominance, and has more than 40% of the market in handle.
Combined with DraftKings, they control 68.2% of the market. The top four have almost 94% of the pie (93.9%) to date.
Other highlights include:
- More than $572.55 million generated in total mobile handle for the week ending Jan. 23, 2022 (the largest weekly to date and the only time handle has gone over $500 million).
- Just over three weeks ago, more than $44.49 million in total mobile GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue) was registered for the week ending Dec. 11, 2022 (the largest so far).
- The state’s largest monthly handle to date was its first month (Jan. 2022) ---at more than $1.669 billion. The state has reached more than $1.6 billion twice, including March 2022 ($1.638 billion), and surpassed $1.5 billion five times, including the last two months (October, November 2022).
Official Dec. 2022 figures are expected to be released sometime next week. The overall mobile total handle will eclipse the $1.6 billion mark and total GGR will propel past $1.3billion.
