The power of fandom can be exhilarating and exasperating during every play, every game and every season. Some teams are built for the playoffs with a shot at glory, while the majority are always looking to improve and upgrade for another chance at hope when another season comes along.
Utilizing New York betting apps, EmpireStakes.com found the odds of each NFL, NBA and NHL team making the playoffs as of Oct. 5. After combining the percentage chance of each team for a city, we were able to arrive at the fanbases least likely to see the postseason this sports calendar year. Note that only cities with a team in each league were included.
For New York, the Jets, Nets and Islanders were grouped together because of the overlap in the fan bases. Here are the top five cities/regions that continue to dream:
Fanbases Least Likely to See Postseason
New York Trio Ranks Third
The Empire State placed right in the middle at No. 3 with a 101.3 combined percentage. Out of the three teams listed, the New York Islanders (+100, 50%) had the best chance at seeing the postseason in the state. The Brooklyn Nets (+145, 40.8%) came in second and the New York Jets (+850, 10.5%) finished third.
However, the Jets playoff odds would have dramatically improved if newly acquired, future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, did not suffer a torn Achilles tendon four plays into the first game of the season.
Chicago topped the list with a combined 54.9%, with the best chance coming from the Bulls (+150, 40%). The nation's capital, Washington, D.C., placed second with a combined 62.9%. The Capitals (+250, 28.6%) had the best chance at making the postseason.
Just a reminder, the 78th NBA regular season tips off on Oct. 24. BetRivers NY has the Nets as a 1-point home underdog in the season opener against Cleveland with a moneyline of -105.
