While there has been so much talk of proposals floating around about three potential downstate casino locations, it is actually upstate that will be adding another casino to New York sports betting this week.
Resorts World Hudson Valley (RWHV) - located in Newburgh, just 60 miles north of Manhattan - will be the Empire State’s newest casino. RWHV will celebrate its grand opening Wednesday at 10 a.m.
This Casino Makes It a Dozen
This will be Genting’s third casino destination in the state of New York, along with Resorts World Catskills in Monticello (94 miles from New York City) and Resorts World New York City in Queens.
Currently, New York has 11 casinos upstate, seven run by Native American tribes and four commercial sites that opened following a change to the state’s Constitution in 2013. Other than Monticello, the state’s other three commercial retail casinos are: del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo, Rivers Casino in Schenectady and Tioga Downs in Nichols.
Located at the Newburgh Mall in Orange County, RWHV will feature 50,000 square feet of gaming/hospitality space, highlighted by 1,200 state-of-the-art slot machines and electronic table games, as well as the new Resorts World Bet Sports Bar.
“Resorts World Hudson Valley represents a shared vision that we, along with our partners in Orange County, had to create an entertainment destination that will attract hundreds of thousands of guests and visitors, while providing tremendous benefits to the local, regional and statewide community,” said Robert DeSalvio, president of Genting Americas East, in a news release. “We are delighted to open our doors this holiday season and welcome everyone to Resorts World Hudson Valley!”
With 250 new full-time jobs at an average annual wage of $72,000 (including salary and benefits), RWHV estimates it will contribute approximately $65 million in new state taxes every year to support the state’s public school system. To date, Resorts World properties have contributed more than $3.6 billion to support public schools in New York.
Across all three properties, Genting said it has invested more than $1.2 billion, including $50 million in RWHV.
